01Who you're dealing with

Hi, I'm
George.

Layout is me. You deal with the same person from the first message to the last file — no account managers, no being passed around, and no explaining your business twice.

The story
George Lay, founder of Layout, by the water in Oxfordshire
George Lay — founder, Layout

It started on a farm in Fyfield.

I grew up on my family's farm. Farming was never going to be my thing — but even the farm needed help with how it looked online. That told me everything: every business has a gap somewhere, and most of the good ones round here just haven't had the time to fix it.

I've got a first class degree in Events Management, which is really a degree in deadlines, suppliers and making something look right on the day. I've always been pulled toward marketing, and I've worked in marketing and PR agencies since.

Now I build websites, take the photographs that go in them, and sort out how businesses look across everything else — around Oxfordshire, mostly for people I can actually go and meet.

How I work
02How I work

Why it's
different.

One person

You're not handed to a junior after the pitch. The person you meet is the person who builds it, shoots it and answers the email six months later.

Brand first

I understand the business before opening a design file. It's slower on day one and much faster afterwards, because nothing gets decided twice.

Hands on

I turn up. The photography and video are made at your business, on location — not sourced from a stock library and hoped for the best.

An opinion

You're paying for judgement, not just execution. I'll tell you what I'd do and why — including when something isn't worth spending money on yet.

Joined up

Brand, website, photography, social and design come from one place, so nothing contradicts anything else. You don't have to coordinate five suppliers.

Local

Oxfordshire and nearby. Close enough to come and see the place, which matters more than people expect.

Outside work

The rest of it.

Because you're hiring a person, not a logo. Long walks round the Oxfordshire countryside with my dogs, the gym most mornings, travelling whenever I can, and a slight obsession with getting the right shot — which is handy, given the job.

Fair warning if you run a café or a restaurant: I'll want to try everything before I photograph it.

What I love outside work hours

In a bakery, holding a fresh baguette
At a restaurant table with a friend
Sun loungers and palm trees at a beach club
In front of the Eiffel Tower in the snow
Graduation day in cap and gown
On the coast on a summer afternoon
Black and white, at a restaurant table
Crouched on the grass with one of my dogs
At the gym
With family and the dog in a Cotswold village

Tell me
what you need.

You don't have to know exactly what you want. Describe what's not working and I'll tell you what I'd do about it.
